Flu Vaccinations Still Available in Raton

January 13, 2016 - Immunization - Vaccination

The New Mexico Department of Health’s Colfax Public Health Office, 226 E. 4th Ave, Raton, NM still has flu vaccinations available for adults and children Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. There is no charge to those attending the clinic, but everyone should bring their insurance card, including Medicaid or Medicare, with them.

Even if you think you already had the flu this season, it is recommended everyone 6 months and older get a flu vaccine. The flu vaccine protects against multiple strains of flu that may be circulating at any given time, and people can get infected with more than one type of flu during the season. People in the following groups particularly are at high risk of having serious flu-related complications or because they live with or care for people at high risk for developing flu-related complications:

  • Children 6 months through 4 years of age
  • Pregnant women (any trimester)
  • People age 50 and older
  • People of any age with certain chronic medical conditions like asthma, diabetes, lung or heart disease, and those who are immunocompromised
  • People who live in nursing homes and other long-term care facilities
  • People who live with or care for those at high risk for complications from flu
  • American Indians and Alaskan Natives
  • People who are morbidly obese
  • Healthcare and early childhood personnel

The Department of Health also recommends that you ask your healthcare provider or pharmacist if you need the pneumococcal vaccine which can be given at the same time as flu vaccine. Influenza frequently causes types of pneumonia that can be prevented by the pneumococcal vaccine.

People in these groups should also consider seeing their health care provider to be evaluated for antiviral medication if they develop flu symptoms.
