National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day

April 23, 2014 - Opioid Safety - Safety

The National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day aims to provide a safe, convenient, and responsible means of disposing of prescription drugs, while also educating the general public about the potential for abuse of medications. Use this tool to locate a site near you!

The New Mexico Department of Health urges residents to participate in National Prescription Drug Take Back Day, Saturday, April 26 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Collection sites in southwest New Mexico as well as statewide will be set up as and staffed by state and local police and county sheriff’s departments. The service is free and anonymous.

The New Mexico Department of Health reported 486 New Mexicans died of drug overdose in 2012. That was a seven percent decrease from 2011.

“Safely disposing of old or unused prescription drugs in our own homes is one small step we can all take to limit the availability of drugs in our communities,” said Southwest Region Public Health Director Ray Stewart. “I encourage everyone to take a few minutes to clean out their own medicine cabinets.”

National Drug Take Back Day is sponsored by the US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and has been successful over the last seven years of removing over 3.4 million pounds (1,733 tons) of medication from circulation.
