Department of Health announces top New Mexico baby names in 2023

SANTA FE – Here is the list of top 10 baby names in New Mexico in 2023 as compiled by the Department of Health’s Bureau of Vital Records and Health Statistics.

* Provisional as of Dec. 18, 2023. Provisional data is based on available records that meet data quality criteria at the time of analysis and does not include all births that occurred in 2023. Final data is subject to change.

Trends since the Department of Health began reporting names in 2014:

  • Eight each of the top 10 girl and boy names from 2022 stayed on the top 10 list in 2023.
  • Oliver and James fell out of the top ten from last year and are replaced by Josiah and Julian.  Julian returns to the top ten for the first time since 2018. This is Josiah’s first appearance in the top ten since 2017.
  • Evelyn has dropped out of the top ten list, making room for Sofia. Both Sofia and Sophia have consistently held positions in the top ten girl names six of the last nine years.
  • The top four boy names this year are identical in order as 2022.
  • Liam has been the top boy's name three of the last four years.
