The goal of the Community Health Worker (CHW) Survey is to gain a more accurate picture of the CHW profession and capacity in New Mexico, particularly for addressing chronic disease and social determinants of health. Through secondary data analysis, key informant interviews, and surveys, this assessment identified how CHW/Tribal CHR/Promotor(a) are currently being trained, certified, employed, reimbursed, and utilized in New Mexico.

Community Health Workers Asthma Training Opportunity

Asthma is a serious chronic health challenge the Asthma Control Program is working to address in our state. Engaging our Community Health Workers (CHWs) who are on the frontline of public health to reduce the burden is a critical link, and the CDC recognizes the positive impact that CHWs can have on assisting families with asthma self-management and mitigating environmental triggers. The relationships that CHWs have with their communities allow them to serve as an important link between the clinic and schools, and reduce environmental triggers within the home.

The goal of this training is to improve knowledge, skills and understanding among CHWs. Learning the basic educational concepts of asthma and asthma self-management so they are able to teach children and adults with asthma and their families how to effectively manage their disease using evidence-based asthma self-management practices. Join us for a 12 hour training for CHWs to learn effective strategies to reduce asthma burden. The course will consist of 5 virtual meetings and 5 hours of guided self-paced learning. Please see the attached flyer for dates and times.

Learning objectives will cover:

  • Understanding asthma burden
  • Asthma and impacts of a chronic disease
  • Trigger and environmental control strategies
  • Asthma self-management and Asthma Action Plan
  • Empowering families and impact positive care coordination

Registration closes February 4-2022, 5 pm. For additional information, please contact Norma Vazquez, 505-490-7322
